Most people who write to us about focus are still shipping work. What they cannot do is open the one file that matters, or stop the internal commentary running underneath everything else while they work. Those are mechanically different problems, and suggestion work has something to offer for one of them.
Can hypnosis actually improve concentration?
Sometimes, and rarely by making your attention sharper. What a hypnotic session can plausibly shift is the resistance sitting in front of a specific task, which is what most people at Tabula Rasa Studios are describing when they say they have lost focus. Responsiveness to hypnotic suggestion varies between individuals, so this lands differently for different people.
The mechanism is worth stating before the conclusion. A hypnotic induction lowers critical evaluation for a while, and language accepted in that state is scrutinised less than it would be over coffee. That gives you a window to say something to yourself that you would normally argue with. If the reason you cannot start is a rule your system holds about what starting will cost you, that rule is addressable by suggestion. If the reason is that you slept five hours, it is not. Does hypnotherapy work sets out where the evidence for suggestion is strong and where it thins out.
What do people mean when they say they have lost focus?
At least four different complaints arrive under that one phrase: cannot start a particular task, cannot stop thinking about work when the laptop is shut, cannot hold a thread across interruptions, and cannot stay mentally awake past mid-afternoon. Naming which one you have is the useful first step, because they have different causes.
The version that brings founders to us is almost always the first, dressed as the third. The day fragments, and the fragmentation gets blamed on Slack. Look at what actually happened and the fragmented hours were spent on tasks that were easy to begin, while the one that mattered stayed at the bottom of the list, being carried forward. Interruptions are real, though they tend to be invited by whatever you were avoiding.
Why can I focus on some things and not others?
Because attention that holds fine for a four-hour technical problem you enjoy, or a difficult investor call, is working. What changes between tasks is the emotional cost of the specific one you are avoiding, and your system is allocating away from the expensive thing exactly as it is designed to.
That expense is usually about what completing the task exposes. Send the deck and it gets judged. Write the strategy and someone finds out you were guessing. Avoidance solves that problem very efficiently, at the price of your week. It shows up in the same people as overthinking, which is the same avoidance running with the laptop still open, and it is the engine underneath most self-sabotage. Where the fear is specifically about being found out, hypnosis for imposter syndrome is the closer fit.
How do I tell an attention problem from an avoidance problem?
Test it against tasks of equal difficulty. If a hard task you feel neutral about holds your attention and a hard task you feel exposed by does not, the variable is the exposure. If nothing holds, across work you like and work you dread, the cause is more likely physiological or clinical.
| What's actually going on | What it looks like | Whether suggestion work helps |
|---|---|---|
| Avoidance of one specific task | Everything else gets done, unusually well; the one item is carried forward for weeks | Yes, where the avoidance is driven by a belief about what finishing exposes |
| Decision fatigue | Focus is fine until early afternoon, then all judgement feels expensive | Indirectly, by reducing the rumination that burns the same resource |
| Poor sleep | Attention is thin from the first hour, on everything, regardless of interest | No. Nothing in an audio session substitutes for sleep |
| Environmental interruption | Attention returns immediately when the interruption stops | No. This is a calendar and notification problem |
| Lifelong, pervasive attention difficulty | Present since childhood, across school, jobs, hobbies and relationships | No. This belongs with a qualified clinician for assessment |
What is actually in a hypnotic session built for focus?
An induction, then suggestion aimed at one belief. Our sessions run fifteen to twenty minutes: a settling and induction phase, a body of suggestion written around the specific thing you said you avoid, and a return. The wording comes from your intake, so the session names your actual task rather than "your goals".
The suggestion work is aimed at the cost of starting rather than at concentration itself. Instead of telling you that you are a focused person, which your system can check against last Tuesday and reject, it works on the prediction that makes the task expensive to begin. Whether that specificity beats a well-written library track is a mechanism argument rather than a measured one, and I have set out both sides in personalised vs generic hypnosis audio.
Audio is composed at 396, 528 or 639 Hz. Those are production choices about how the tones sit under a voice. There is no clinical evidence base for specific healing properties of particular frequencies, and we claim none.
What will hypnosis for focus not do?
It will not replace sleep, and it will not create hours. A session cannot compensate for chronic short sleep, a workload that exceeds the week, a role you have outgrown, or a team structure that puts every decision through you. Those are structural, and suggestion work applied to a structural problem produces a calmer person doing the same impossible job.
It also does not address ADHD. If your attention difficulties are lifelong and pervasive rather than task-specific, showing up in childhood and across every setting since, the right step is an assessment with a qualified clinician, and any treatment that follows belongs with them. Tabula Rasa is a wellness tool. We do not diagnose, and we are not an alternative to that assessment.
How do I use a focus session over 21 days?
Listen once a day for twenty-one consecutive days, at the same point in your day, without doing anything else. Most people choose the evening. Suggestion appears to work partly through repeated exposure, so consistency does more here than intensity, and listens scattered across a month will not do what twenty-one consecutive ones might.
Our own personalised hypnotic session ($62) is written for that schedule rather than for a single listen. The pattern our listeners report runs roughly like this. The first week is mostly the session itself, and little changes outside it. Somewhere in the second week the avoided task tends to get started earlier in the day, which is the first thing worth watching for. By the third week the reported change is usually about the size of the resistance rather than its absence. Keep a one-line note each day of when you started the hard thing, because your memory of the fortnight will be less accurate than the notes. Responsiveness varies, and some people notice very little.
What Tabula Rasa makes
